Sword Canes became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was less socially acceptable to openly wield a sword in public, hence the stick sword evolved. This was a cane, umbrella, or staff with an edged blade inside. These serve as a standard walking cane or working umbrella, but with a sharpened, edged blade that can be simply and rapidly withdrawn from the shaft.
